southern girl problems

10.09.2012

As you know I am a southern girl, born and raised.
accent & all!
You also know that I no longer live in the south. We moved away from Georgia about 7 months ago, and I am slowly noticing that I miss things.
By things I mean certain food and drinks. The funny thing about this is that the items I miss and crave are not even things that I had all that often.

Ready to hear what I miss?

collard greens: I literally ate these 2 or 3 times a year and I have made them 5 or six times since we moved. This isn't easy because you can't find a good batch of fresh ones very often up here. So when we see that our grocer has a new shipment in I buy 3 bunches and make them that night!

sweet tea: Even though growing up it was ALWAYS on hand in my house growing up, once I moved out I honestly never made it. I might get it once in a while when we went out to eat, but I never made it at home. Now I find myself wanting to make sweet tea because you can't get it anywhere here!

boiled peanuts: Oh hold me! I seriously want some boiled peanuts! Like I have seriously thought about boiled peanuts every day for months! But they simply are NONEXISTENT here. People look at me like I'm nuts ( yup! that look that you have on your face right now ) when I even mention them. Papa Bear and I even joke about opening a stand at the next festival and selling nothing but sweet tea and boiled peanuts. What do you think? Would we make a killing? haha!

cheese grits: I only ate these once in a while at work growing up. Now I want them constantly. This is one of the easiest things for me. I can get grits at the store (even though they only have 1 brand. Not several like I'm used to) but I have learned something living up here. Apparently grits are sweet up here. THAT IS WRONG! lol. Grits should be salty, buttery, and if your me they should be cheesy. If you want to make them even better crumble up some bacon and put it in there. Yes this is AMAZING! I love me some bacon cheese grits!

I'm sure as the year/years go by I will find more things that I miss/want and I will make or find a way to get them. But for now these are my four main things.

Have any of you ever moved away from where you grew up and find yourself missing something that you only got there?

  1. I'm sorry Tiffany but I can't do the boiled peanuts. They are everywhere here in Florida. I just can't get over the texture.

  3. It's funny you say Sweet Tea, because I'd never heard of it til I moved to Cinci! And people are all about their chili and Goetta here. I guess there's not too much I miss from home that I can't get here. Except maybe Diet Sunkist Lemonade and Cinnamon Gummy Bears from Kwik Trip. How's that for particular, lol!

  4. I grew up near Chicago and a few years ago I moved away - first to GA, then to KS, then back to GA. There are so many food options in Chicago that its crazy everywhere else. I miss Italian beefs (though my dad makes great homemade ones to make up for it), Chicago dogs, Chicago pizza, good gyros, and so on. Occasionally I can find a place that makes acceptable forms of them (Freddy's in KS has pretty good dogs), but OH I have a list every time I make it back north.

  5. When I left home for college I always craved my favorite local restaurant. They have this special dipping sauce for their sandwiches that does not exist anywhere else and it is AMAZING! Brandon always wondered why I obsessed over it until we moved here and now he gets it :)

Also I need to send you my grandmothers cope for her grits, it's almost like a casserole. Super buttery, garlic, classic southern comfort food!

  6. Haha---this post makes me laugh! I grew up with Southern cooking as my mom is a born and raised Southerner---and it definitely is hard to find up north! McDonalds Sweet Tea for $1 is how I survive some days!
