night terrors

12.01.2012

I think that at some point we all go through the night terror phase with our children. We did that. There was a point where she was waking up screaming every single night and it would take forever to soothe her back to sleep.
Lately we have been going through a completely different form of the night Terrors. She is scared to death of SHADOWS. At first she seemed to be scared of the dark. So we got a little 1 watt  accent bulb to keep her room bright at night. This was an amazing solution for about 2 nights. Then she noticed the shadows. So every night before bed I would explain what each and every shadow was. At first it kind of worked...for a couple of nights. Now she pitches a fit when I try to leave the room at night and clings on to me begging me not to leave her. We went in and checked on her the other night and, even though we finally got her to let me leave the room and go to sleep, she had her head covered up so she was still scared.
I know that to an extent this is totally normal. When I was little I remember that I would call my mom into my room every night because there was a "scary snowman" shadow on the wall from something in our room. I don't remember how long that lasted, but now that the shoe is on the other foot I really hope it wasn't long.
Have any of you dealt with this?  What did you do?  We now have a night light that shows a castle on the ceiling and that seems
to be helping a little. But we will see.
